What Is Brain Power?
Brain Power has been formulated from the meticulous research by Phil Richards on how to optimise brain function, enhance concentration and have a better sense of well being.
Brain power contains 3 very important substrates that significantly enhances brain function SAM-e (S-adenosy-L-methionine), Phosphatydlyserine and Alpha GPC (Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine).
SAM-e is S-adenosy-L-methionine
The scientific name for SAM-e is S-adenosy-L-methionine. It is a methyl donor, allowing simple molecules to join together to form complex molecules. This process is absolutely essential to life. Depression SAMe has been shown to increase the levels of dopamine (a neurotransmitter) found in the brain. Dopamine helps to regulate mood. Several double-blinded clinical trials show that SAM-e can be effective for treating depression. How does SAM-e affect anxiety and mood? This amino acid derivative is involved in the synthesis of mood-regulating neurotransmitters. SAM-e is involved in the pathway that leads to the production of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine and facilitates their binding to the proper receptor sites in the brain. It is also used to make one of the body's essential antioxidant glutathione, needed to protect the liver and the body against oxidative damage.
Phosphatidylserine enables your brain cells to metabolize glucose and to release and bind with neurotransmitters. All of which is important to learning, memory and other cognitive functions. (1. Vannucchi, M.G., Pepeu, G. Effect of Phosphatidylserine on Acetylcholine Release and Content in Cortical Slices From Aging Rats.Neurobiol Aging 1987, 8(5), 403-407). Phosphatidylserine is thought to increase communication between brain cells by increasing the number of membrane receptor sites for receiving messages. It also plays a role in the fluidity of cell membranes essential to your brain cells' ability to send and receive chemical communication. (Lombard, J. (board certified neurologist), et al. The brain wellness plan - breakthrough medical, nutritional and immune-boosting therapies to prevent and treat depression, alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, attention deficit disorder, multiple sclerosis, parkinson's disease, lou gehrig's disease. Kensington Pub. Corp. 1998).
Studies also demonstrate phosphatidylserine restores the brain’s supply and output of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter important to memory. (, T.H. Treatment of Age-Related Cognitive Decline: Effects of Phosphatidylserine in Anti-Aging 33 Medical Therapeutics,Vol II, edited by R.M. Klatz, Health Quest Publications, Chicago, 1998, 20-29.)
Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, like phosphatidylserine, is an orthomolecular compound (found naturally in the brain), where it serves as an acetylcholine precursor. Acetylcholine is an essential neurotransmitter involved in memory, cognition, sleep, and neuromuscular control. Acetylcholine decline coincides with advancing age, and is a hallmark of neurodegenerative disease.
We think that Alpha GPC may protect and facilitate communication between nerves through its effect on receptors for nerve growth factor, a naturally occurring substance that regulates acetylcholine receptors. With aging, the number of nerve growth factor receptors typically decline. GPC promotes the growth, repair, and increased expression of nerve growth factor receptors in the cerebellar cortex, a brain region responsible for coordination and movement control. (Vega JA, Cavallotti C, del Valle ME, Mancini M, Amenta F. Nerve growth factor receptor immunoreactivity in the cerebellar cortex of aged rats: effect of choline alfoscerate treatment. Mech Ageing Dev. 1993 Jun;69(1-2):119-27). Well controlled clinical trials have reported that glycerophosphocholine can improve attention, cognition, mood and behaviour in people with memory decline. It has also been used with recovery from brain trauma, and used to boost growth hormone. (Kidd, Parris M. GPC (GlyceroPhosphoCholine) Mind-Body Power for Active Living and Healthy Aging The Vital Nutrient for Survival. Parris M. Kidd, PhD).
So you can see that these 3 nutrients can really help to enhance your brain power!
